La Donna e Mobile is a famous aria sung by the Duke of Mantua in Giuseppe Verdis opera, Rigoletto. The opera tells a twisted tale of love, desire, and deceit, composed between 1850 and 1851. The song describes a womans fickle nature, charming the audience with its memorable melody.
The inherent irony is that the Duke, a callous playboy, is the one who is mobile ("inconstant"). Its reprise towards the end of the opera is chilling, as Rigoletto realizes from the sound of the Dukes lively voice coming from within the tavern (offstage), that the body in the sack over which he has grimly triumphed is not that of the Duke after all: Rigoletto had paid Sparafucile, an assassin, to kill the Duke but Sparafucile deceived him by killing Gilda, Rigolettos beloved daughter, instead.
The Lyrics of La Donna e Mobile:
La donna e mobile
Qual piuma al vento
Muta daccento
E di pensiero
Sempre un amabile
Leddiadro viso
In pianto o in riso
E menzognero
La donna e mobil
Qual piuma al vento
Muta daccento
E di pensiere di pensier
E di pensier
E sempre misero
Chi a lei saffida
Chi le confida
Mal-cauto il core
Pur mai no sentesi
Felice appieno
Chi su quel seno
Non liba amore
La donna e mobil
Qual piuma al vento
Muta daccento
E di pensiere di pensier
E di pensier
